How Writing Can Help You Achieve Your Biggest Dreams
For the longest time I was scared
I didn’t think people would read anything that I wrote
Why would people care about my perception of the world, my vision of the future or my feelings on current events?
Only when I realised the purpose of my writing wasn’t to please other people did I start to connect with those who cared about what I had to say.
By not caring if people read what I was writing they started to consume it more frequently, respond and share their thoughts
Only when you stop writing for other people, embrace vulnerability and braveness which comes from putting yourself out their to the world unedited, do you start to feel value in what you are creating.
The value you release to the world returns in the most exciting ways. Whether that is a serendipitous connection, an idea you never previously considered or an opportunity that wouldn’t have found you.
To be your most creative you have to let go
Of both yourself and your ideas
You need to share the thoughts which make you feel most insecure. Those ideas, beliefs and convictions which you know will be challenged by a wider audience.
Only when you create thought provoking content can you expect to receive judgement
If you passively commit to what you write people who consume your writing will be as blasé as you were writing it.
To reach people you need to share your inner most thoughts. You must find the things that are burning passions within yourself and expose them to the world. A fire only grows stronger when it is exposed to oxygen and has sufficient fuel to burn.
Great writing is about connection
It’s about giving a part of yourself to anyone who reads any of the words you have written
And what is true for writing is true in life. We feel the most affection for the people who give to us freely without the expectation of receiving anything in return.
Great writing is a gift that never stops giving.
It is a mirror of self reflection that allows you to see your true self
When people connect with what you write it allows you to see yourself from their perspective, warts and all. It lets you accurately access your purpose.
Now, the past and in the future
What you write captures who you are at a single moment in time
But it doesn’t define who you are, what you’ve been nor does it constrain who you can become.
Words are the tools which has allows civilisation to flourish, but they are also the weapons which have led to wars and genocide.
You must recognise the weight that your words can have – to hurt or to heal, to create or destroy, to love or to hate.
